An introduction
Ulcomb House was the second of our homes to open and quickly added to the reputation developed by Cartref Homes for creating real change in the lives of its service users. The home provides targeted residential support service for service users with learning disabilities who may also have mental health difficulties, challenging behaviours and other special needs but who seek the opportunity to live more independently.
With only 5 bedrooms and high levels of staff support Ulcomb House is able to deliver intensive skills teaching to service users with greater care and support needs.
Service Aims
To provide a safe home and support which sets clear boundaries and expectations for service users who aspire to more independent living.
To create opportunities for community integration by developing links with local education providers, employers and other support services.
To provide in-house programmes which enable the service users to develop skills, take risks and acquire dignity whilst learning to take responsibility for their own lives and behaviour.
To ensure each service user needs are assessed and met through access to appropriate professional, specialist and pastoral support services.
To promote equality of opportunity and encourage anti- discriminatory practice by recognising, rights, choices, beliefs and values of service users and their families.
Facilities
Ulcomb House is situated close to all the amenities of Sittingbourne - a bustling town surrounded by the delights of rural Kent, yet only an hour from the attractions of London and the sandy beaches of the North Kent coast.
The house is furnished and equipped to a high specification with all service users enjoying single rooms.
The spacious accommodation provides a homely environment which is conducive to both learning and comfortable living. The home also benefits from a large conservatory and secluded garden.
Furthermore, service users can take advantage of the vocational and educational resources of the Resource Centre attached to the company’s head office in the adjoining grounds.
Staff
The registered manager of the home, Debby Baldock, leads a team with a rich mixture of skills and experiences well-suited to meeting the needs of service users from a variety of backgrounds. Through time the Ulcomb team has shown itself especially skilled in working with service users arriving from institutionalised settings - particularly those with forensic histories. Under Debby’s management a number of service users with a history of significantly challenging behaviour have therefore made safe and successful transitions to community based living.
As with the other parts of Cartref Homes, the staff of Ulcomb House benefit from the positive links and networking achieved with local support services such as Disability Care Managers, Learning Disability Health Teams and our sub-contracted Clinical Psychology provision.
